How to Be a Color Blocker: Shoes

Sat, 06/02/2012 - 12:11AM by Black Orchid 0 Comments -

I love color.  My favorite shades of pink, purple, blue are the ones that are the most vibrant shades and are all over my home.  Before you think my abode is where Crayola came to die, I know to balance pops of color with neutral furntiture.    As I've gotten more comfortable with shades like yellow, orange, and green, I follow the same matra to ensure I don't look like 80s cartoon fixture Rainbow Brite. Here are some recommendations on what to buy to work with the current color trend, but not oversaturate your body with every shade in Pantone's index:

I love a good wedge.  Gives you height when you need it, easier to maneuver than stilettos in spring/summerlike settings such as cookouts or the park, and cute.  The Xhilaration® Teresa Espadrille Wedge from Target gives you the tradition of an espadrille, the now-ness of a wedge, classic navy or grey patent leather with a hint of neon green or yellow.  Best part - they're $29.99. Why not snag both pair?  FashionStyle tip:  this wedge is 5 inches high, so IF you're not used to wearing such a height, stay to the lower end and opt not to wear these shoes.

When going bright, a neutral base is key.  These patent nude heels from Target do the trick without breaking your wallet.  When I wore these, I got nothing but compliments the entire day.  The Mossimo® Petra Patent Heeled Sandal is a classic style that can be worn with skirts and suits to jeans and cutoffs.  for $29.99, the price is not hard to be beat. FashionStyle tip:  This is also a 5 inch heel, but because of the 1 inch platform in the front, it does not seem as high.  Also, go to your local store and see if the shoe is on clearance.  I've seen it for 30% - 50% less at Target locations.

I've pulled some other great shoes that caught my attention that follow the wedge, strappy sandal, and peep toe classic styles boosted up with saturated, on trend color.

Prom Pops of Fashion

Thu, 05/03/2012 - 12:57AM by Black Orchid 0 Comments -

Its prom time again, and the anticipation of getting a dress that is not only appropriate, but unique and will stand out in the sea of dresses your classmate will wear.  Its a fun time to get dressed up and celebrate high school, but the most fun is picking out the dress.  Some say prom is a precursor to wedding dress shopping - when you know, u know!  Some, like myself, designed their prom dresses to eliminate the need to shop and the chance someone else has your dress on.  This young lady took it a step further by not only making the dress herself, but by accessorizing it with 5000 pop tabs from soda cans on her dress.

Do you think her dress was cute or corny?  Either way, her ingenueity has at least guaranteed her a unique dress and a spot on Project Runway if she wants it.

80s Inspired Jewelry Bliss

Fri, 04/27/2012 - 10:01AM by Black Orchid 0 Comments -

So let's say you grew up in the infamous 80s.  An era when video games first began to rule the earth, Regan-omics made the rich richer, and oppulence was king.  If you were enthralled with video games as most 80s kids, I ran across a lovely nostalgic piece of jewelry that made me wish for days of unlimited candy and hours of video games.

Fyi this isn't a video game nostalgia piece.  It's a "pie missing a piece", just in case they are any laywers for a certain gaming group reading this.

Interested in ordering the four silver rings, four adorned with black onyx, for $124 by Rachel Pfeffer? Click here and order away. These are custom pieces, so make sure you know your ring sizes.

You TOO Can Have/Be a Stylist!

Thu, 04/26/2012 - 1:27PM by Black Orchid 0 Comments -

For a time, my ultimate dream was to be an assistant stylist on What Not to Wear.  The show brought the idea of a stylist, long profession left to the creative world of magazines and celebrities, to the American forefront with men and women everywhere looking critically at their closets recognizing the need to purge. Now Stacey London has brought the idea to the masses with Style for Hire.

"Cindy and I started Style for Hire based on a belief that everyone not just the rich or famous should be able to get personal help with style. Style for Hire is the natural outgrowth of the work I do on TLC's hit show What Not to Wear: helping people with unique bodies, tastes, and budgets develop their own sense of style; learn how to dress their body-type; and optimize the investment they make in their wardrobe."

They provide different consultations (Closet Audit, Closet Shopping, Personal Shopping, Group Meetings) to allow you to have a stylist come in and help you to your specific need and budget.  The idea is genius, really.  For someone like myself who wants to work with them, there are one day stylist workshops, teaching additional skill like editorial styling, personal styling, the science of styling, and the art of style that must be taken prior to taking an interview to be considered for a spot as a "Style for Hire" official stylist.  With prices starting at $800 for one course, its a good career development course if you are a serious stylist.

Misa Hylton has been a force in the music and fashion industry, creating memorable moments in video history like the "Crush On You"video color block motif and the infamous Lil'Kim one boobie jumpsuit that had even Diana Ross reach out and touch.  She has created an academy, called the Misa Hylton Fashion Academy,  where you learn the how to be stylist or refresh your styling career with styling centric courses.  Misa's classes are more detailed, with one day to 8 week courses going in depth of the styling field.  Misa's academy, however, and gives participants a styling kit upon completion of the 8 week course, photos to update comp cards, certificate,  business forms and book.  You have to be interviewed to be considered for Misa's academy, so for those interested please email info@Themisahyltonfashionacademy.com

VOGUE - Internet Bully?

Thu, 03/29/2012 - 2:12PM by Black Orchid 0 Comments -

Following the postings of The Vogue City (www.thevoguecity.com) has allowed me (and you) a chance to be notified on how acquire fantastic fashion at sample sales all over the country.  Unfortunately, due to allegeded trademark infrigement, www.theVoguecity.com has been required to change its name to The Stylish City

Why bother pointing out this website battle?  Technically, the word vogue has been trademarked by the stylish magazine that dominates the fashion world.  By definition, the word means:

The prevailing fashion, practice, or style.

Now whilst VOGUE Magazine has the right to protect its name, the slippery slope this trademark filing for the word VOGUE (which, according to the filing, technically covers cosmetics and cleaning products) disallows those true fans of fashion - the consumer - the ability to interact with fashion in a personal way.

Will they start after vogueing?  Sue Madonna next? What are your thougths?

Christian Louboutin 20th Anniversary Book

Tue, 11/01/2011 - 2:27PM by Black Orchid 0 Comments -

Christian Louboutin is celebrating 20 yrs in the business by releasing an anthology of his work. One of Hollywood's favorite shoes designers, currently embroiled in the second round of a lawsuit to protect the signature red soles from being copied by others, his personal history is as important as his signature shoes (Ironically, he created a pair of shoes in 2002 for the company is currently suing). The key takeaway from the book is his desire to be different, and his love of shoes. He had no idea as a club going youngster and self professed purposed underachiever he'd end up designing shoes. I'd like this book for my birthday please ;).  It is cheaper than an actual PAIR of Louboutins.
